PIPER Sudangrass was developed by the Wisconsin Agricultural Experiment Station. Piper Sudangrass is an improved variety of sudangrass, it has finer stems and leaves than Sorghum-Sudan hybrid. It has very good forage yielding ability and is very low in hydrocyanic acid (prussic acid) content. It has good disease resistance and has the palatability characteristics of sweet sudangrass. It produces good regrowth after pasturing, has stiff stalks when mature, and produces high yields of good quality seed. Because of the smaller stems, it dries faster than Sorghum Sudan, if cut for hay. It still does not dry as quick as alfalfa because of its juicy stems. To get finer quality hay, plant 25 to 35 Ibs. per acre or 45 kgrs per hectare after corn planting time. Piper Sudan is atrazine tolerant. Do not use for horse hay or pasture. To avoid prussic acid poisoning, do not pasture after planting until the plants are about knee high. Also do not pasture the new growth that may come up with a warm spell after a hard frost. AMERICAN genetics Inc. produces Piper Sudangrass seed only in USA. | | |
